Do this one thing to get people listening longer to your podcast
The title of this blog is the hook.
But what about the payoff?
That’s coming.
First, let’s answer an important question: why does it matter how long people listen to your podcast?
If someone downloads your episode, job done… right?
Not quite.
When it comes to podcast growth, the real goal isn’t just downloads - it’s listener retention. The aim is to build a loyal audience that listens to the end of each episode, comes back week after week and is far more likely to engage with you beyond the podcast. That engagement might be visiting your website, following you on social media, joining your mailing list, or eventually buying from you.
In short, the longer people listen to your podcast, the stronger your audience becomes.
Why great content makes people listen longer
Think about the best content you consume; films, binge-worthy TV shows, viral Instagram Reels, or your favourite podcasts. They all have one thing in common:
They make you care quickly.
Take a film trailer. In about 90 seconds, it has to convince you that the story is worth your time. It introduces characters, hints at the stakes and leaves you feeling like you need to know what happens next.
Your podcast needs to work the same way.
If you want to keep people listening to your podcast, you must tell them what’s in it for them early on.
What social media teaches us about podcast engagement
Instagram Reels are a perfect example of audience psychology. Most high-performing Reels open with a mini cliffhanger (a hook) - something that stops you scrolling and makes you watch to the end.
Why?
Because more watch time equals more reach and more money.
This approach isn’t limited to social media. YouTubers do it. Reality TV producers do it (The Traitors, Love Island). Even the news does it. They all give you a reason to care before delivering the full content.
Podcasting is no different.
Attention spans and podcast listener retention
We’ll usually give a film some time to get going because the trailer has already sold us. Social media sits at the opposite extreme. You might give a reel two or three seconds before scrolling on.
Podcasts fall somewhere in the middle. You get a little more time, but not much.
That’s why the first moments of your podcast are critical. You need to hook the listener early, tease what’s coming and then deliver the payoff. Remind them why they should keep listening and then give them the story, insight, or tip they’re waiting for.
(And, of course, the content itself has to be good enough to earn that tease.)
So, how do you get people listening longer to your podcast?
Here’s the simple answer:
Create a strong hook early - and then deliver on the promise.
You can do this by:
- Opening the episode with a powerful clip from later in the conversation.
- Or having the host clearly set the hook, for example:
“Coming up, the really simple, free thing you can do to make your audience listen for longer.”
Give your listeners something to look forward to, remind them it’s coming, then deliver.
Do this consistently and you won’t just improve podcast listener retention - you’ll build an engaged audience that actually sticks around and hits follow.
